This past year, I realized I had kind of dropped the ball on the whole Waldorf way of birthdays, so a few months ago, I bought this book, bought a birthday candle ring, a fabulous silk cape, and a crown for the first birthday up…My 10 year old daughter. I like supporting Ebay artisans so I searched “Waldorf birthday crown” and numerous shops came up. But the one that caught my eye was Tilly Tilda.
Oh goodness… just so beautiful. I ordered Audrey’s straight away. She loved it.

A month later, I ordered one for my little blondie, who was turning 4. Brooke thought her crown was very pretty (even if it wasn’t pink).
Before I go on, a little about Suzy from Tilly Tilda, in her own words:
“Hi, I’m Suzy, and I’m a homeschooling Mama to 5 girls aged between 3 and 16 years. I live in a little village halfway between Sherwood Forest and the sea! I love to create, simple, gentle spirited, Waldorf inspired toys and crafts that encourage imaginative play.
I like to use simple, eco friendly, and organic materials.
Every piece that I create carries a little bit of story in it’s fibres.
As I work, a story is being woven through my hands. That is why each and every doll is unique and their characters become so alive for me.
I hope that this translates. Especially for the children who will play with them.
I believe that all things emanate an energy. So when I create I create with love and joy as my ethic and I hope this comes through as a warmth; something tangible which can be transmitted through the fabric of the work itself.
I am sure that a part of me is still a child and maybe that is why I love what I do :)”
Last month my twin boys with special needs were turning 14. I asked Suzy from Tilly Tilda if she could consider doing not one but two custom crowns; one for each of them. One which reflected Sean’s love of all things train and one that reflected Tim’s love of Knights and Dragons.
The process of this special order was so easy. After my initial email, she set up a custom order in her shop just for me so purchasing was easy. A few weeks later, she sent me some photos to see if I liked what she was doing so far in terms of the designs…
I loved them (and so did the boys!).
They arrived from England with lots of time to spare for their July 4th party and both boys were happy to have crowns that had been made just for them. Being twins, it is easy to just do things the same, but having your own special personalized crown…now that was really special.
I have one more birthday girl this year, My Charlotte will turn 8 in October. She can’t wait to get her special crown from Tilly Tilda.
