I do not use the computer very often with my homeschool, but I do utilize starfall for phonics practice (click here for my previous starfall review) and IXL math for math practice. I stumbled across IXL math by accident on the web one day. It has since become one of my all time favorite homeschool resources.
IXL offers thousands of online practice skills covering pre-K to algebra math, with problems that adapt to a student’s individual proficiency.
There are several things I love about this math practice site:
- It can be personalized with just a few clicks to be based on YOUR state’s standards.
- Unlike other programs, it lets you jump around from level to level and you can repeat already “mastered” levels for additional practice. This is great for students who have what we called “splintered” skills (high in some areas, lower in others) and is also great for children who need additional practice to truly master a particular skill. This also makes it a wonderful resource for children with special needs who need much more repetition that other students.
- Drill work has the option for the child to read to themselves or for the computer to read it to them. Once they pick or fill out their answers, they click submit or submit & finish if they are done with that skill for the day.
- As children go along, they earn rewards on a reward board; a separate one for each grade level. Children can be working on different ones at the same time, if for example their skills fall between two grade levels. The rewards are fast and easy; no game playing. Each reward board is themed: “farm”, “ocean”, etc.
IXL offers a free ten day trial for anyone wanting to give it a go. I will warn you, after day one, I knew I wanted it. It is $79 for a 12 month access, but additional children are just $20 each for the same 12 month period, making it more affordable for larger families. You can also purchase it a month at a time for $9.95 a month; (a great option if you want to use it during summer only, or short period of time where you know you want more practice).
I saved the best for last! It generates reports FOR YOU. These reports tell how many minutes your child practiced, how many problems right our of how many attempted AND what percentage of that grade level math has been completed. You get these to your email inbox weekly to print out as you want. Easy documentation!
I want to be clear that I am not affiliated with them NOR did i receive compensation for this review in any way. I just wanted to share this great tool with you. For my twin sons with special needs who cannot do handwriting, this was an answer to a big math problem for us…allowing them to solve and do their math problems on computer where handwriting was not necessary.
Wishing you a wonderful week in your homeschool,
